Seriously beautiful music from the oldest musicians in MISD’s Orchestra Program.
Orchestra students perform in 3 groups:
– Symphonic Orchestra: string players in 10th through 12 grades
– Chamber Orchestra: an audition-only ensemble for more advanced students. Chamber is divided into A and B sections. All Chamber meets as an official Orchestra class during the school day
– Full Symphonic Orchestra: Chamber and Symphonic Orchestra join together, complemented by wind instrumentalists from the band program, forming a full symphonic orchestra. Wind instrumentalists may include Flutes, Oboes, Clarinets, Bassoons, French Horns, Trumpets, Trombones, Tuba, Tympani and other percussion as needed, as well as possibly Saxophones, Baritone Horns, and Low Clarinet, as called for in the music.
Performance outside the classroom is essential to a musician’s formation. All orchestra students are required to perform as part of an ensemble in front of an audience, whether it may be a community group, parent gathering, or at a competition with an audience.
Performances
The Symphonic Orchestra will perform 6 principal concerts during the school year.
Competitions
Students are encouraged or required to participate in 3 major competitions during the school year, and a competition during the optional Spring Performance Tour.
Advanced Students
Students have the opportunity to perform solos with the full orchestra and in small ensembles.
Seniors each can have a turn being concertmaster.
Students have the opportunity to volunteer teach through the Seattle Music Partners Program.
Students may audition for the Chamber Orchestra, an advanced class during the school day.
Exploring Music in College and Professionally

– Instructors connect interested students with MISD orchestra alumni who are studying music or professionals.
– Concert artists and professional musicians come speak to classes.
– Masterclasses and collaborations with professional musicians are offered.
